Question by justlisa72: diagnosed with gestational diabetes, what must i expect now?
i had to have the three hour glucose test yesterday due to the fact my 1 hr one came back 4-5 points higher then it must have been. out of the 4 blood tests that they did, i failed the 1st 1 and the last one, and you only have to fail 2 to be considered having gestational diabetes. they made me an appointment to go to the hospital for a three hr class of Friday, so that i can discover the way to use the glucose monitor and also the strips that they wrote prescriptions for, and they'll also give me a strict diet and light exercise plan to go by..what else need to i expect? will i need to maintain a log for my physician so that he will know that i am attempting to stick with the diet? will they do more glucose tests on me? will i have much more ultrasounds so that they can monitor my baby boys weight and growth? if i cant maintain it under control with just the diet and exercise what will probably be the next step? how dangerous is this for both me and my baby? i know i will possibly get alot of this info on Friday, but i am genuinely concerned.. correct now my baby is at a perfect size for how far along i am. (28 wks) but the lab tech seriously didnt give me info on what to expect, or what the dangers are.. i am also noticing that my feet are swelling up alot, i mean they look like balloons proper now, is this related to the diabetes or could it be some thing else? any info from anybody who is familiar with this, or who is or has gone thru this i would really appreciate it.. thanks!
